A live newscast runs on equipment from a dozen manufacturers: newsroom software, video servers, graphics, automation, teleprompters. They all have to exchange information reliably, often while the show is on the air.
MOS, the Media Object Server protocol, is one of the standards that makes that possible. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognized its development and standardization with the 2016 Technology & Engineering Emmy, presented in 2017, and I received one for my contributions. I authored two of the biggest changes in the protocol's history.
MOS 2.8.5Web-based plug-ins, replacing ActiveX
Vendor tools used to live inside newsroom systems as Windows-only ActiveX controls. In 2013, as team lead on Inception, I wrote the proposal to replace them with HTML5 web controls that run in any modern browser. The MOS Group adopted it by acclamation at NAB 2016, and it became the HTML5 Web Control specification in MOS 2.8.5.
MOS 4.0Secure MOS over WebSockets
As newsrooms moved onto IT networks and into the cloud, MOS still had no real encryption. I authored the proposal that moved the protocol to secure WebSockets, with authentication and a new Passive Mode that lets a system inside a firewall work with systems outside it without opening inbound ports. The MOS Group designated it version 4.0 in 2018, and it is now the MOS 4.0 standard.

Standards succeed when complicated systems built by different companies simply work together. Viewers never see it. That's exactly the point.
It's one of the things I'm proudest of. Not because of the trophy, but because it's the kind of engineering I love most: solving a hard systems problem once, in a way an entire industry can build on.
